This story deals with 2 astronaunts who have landed on the planet Venus, where it is constantly raining. They travel through the jungles in search of the Sundome, the only refuge from the torrential downpour. The rain in this story is described as neverending, constantly falling on our protagonists.

The two astronaunts trek through the rain in order to reach their final destination, which is the Sundome. But as they search and search to no avail, skeptacisim begins to set in. One of the astronaunts, labeled "the cynic" by Bradbury, doubts the Sundome even exists. Yet they continue, even as the colour of their skin is washed away. The emphasis put on the rain in the opening paragraph is telling as to the theme of the story. The sentence structure in this paragraph helps to show this emphasis, as each detail is given a new sentence.

The astronaunts cannot escape the rain. It is always there, falling on them with as much force and velocity as possible. You can't run away from it, you can only hope to deal with it. In these ways, the rain reminded me a lot of the struggles we face with everyday life. Our life is always there, we cannot escape it. We can only hope to face the problems in life head-on, and deal with them. But really, why do we struggle through life? What's the ultimate goal, what awaits us at the end?

It's like the astronaunts in the story. They rationalize their passage through the rain by keeping hope alive that at the end, they will reatch the Sundome. But what is our Sundome? Is it Heaven? A place we all believe to exist, but really there is no evidence to suggest that Heaven actually exists. Much like the Sundome, we see Heaven as a refuge from the turmoil that we face in our daily lives. We see it as the escape. But what happens if after all this turmoil, all this struggle, we reach the end of our journey, and find nothing?

No Heaven, no Sundome. Just us, left in nothingness, to continue the neverending story. One thing I noticed is that as the astronaunts continued to walk through the rain, the rain began to affect them. The Lieutenant's hands shrank into the hands of wrinkled apes which we have evolved from , and eventually all the colour from his body was washed away. It was as if the farther they moved along, the more they regressed as human beings. I saw this as a metaphor for how we as a human race have changed throughout time. We beleive we have evolved from the time of the apes, yet in some ways we are no better then the apes. Humans have war, religious strife, murders, rapes and racial hatred.

Even after millions of years we cannot get over these problems. Have we really evolved that much as a species? It is interesting that Ray Bradbury chose Venus as the setting for this story.
